Through controlled burns and the planting of thousands of seedlings, the population is rebounding. Built on the Cape Fear River, Fayetteville is by far the largest city in the Sandhills with a population of over 200,000. The city is home to the region's largest mall, Cross Creek Mall and six universities. A big force in the region is the military. Fort Bragg, the most populous military base in the world, is located just west of Fayetteville. The size of a small city, Fort Bragg houses over 50,000 active duty personnel and is considered the unofficial home of the Army. Military contractors and suppliers provide job opportunities. Servicemembers and their families enrich the community and contribute to the local economy. After completing their military service, many choose to stay in the area they've come to regard as home and open businesses like Black Ops Paintball, owned by a veteran. Other military facilities include Pope Field Air Force Base and Camp Mackall training facility. The area is proud of its military heritage as evidenced by the numerous military sites to see. Statues, monuments, historical battlefields, and museums, like the Airborne and Special Operations Museum and the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Museum, dot the entire region. Manufacturing has a presence in the Sandhills. Hand tool company Ingersoll Rand has been a fixture in Moore County for many years while Caterpillar Inc. is a major employer in Lee County. Hanebrands, Inc. has a large facility in Scotland County. With Sanford sitting on both Piedmont clay and beach sand, it has the perfect ingredients to produce brick, giving Lee County the nickname of the "Brick Capital of America." Brick manufacturers General Shale and Lee Brick and Tile employ many in the region. Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst helps provide the skilled workforce manufacturers need. Large shopping malls are not the norm in the Sandhills, but many smaller shopping centers are, and they provide residents and visitors with plenty of opportunities to shop and eat. Big box favorites are there for the "gotta-have-it now" crowd, while unique boutiques seduce the "I'll-know-it-when-I-see-it" shoppers. Of particular interest are shops and restaurants in the Village of Pinehurst. Created by the same man who designed Central Park, the Village of Pinehurst take you back to a simpler time with businesses, eateries and stores housed in quaint cottages along red brick sidewalks. Carriage tours complete the look. Pottery is popular in the region such as the famed Seagrove Pottery of the Sandhills. []
