Many program diplomas and certificates are available for courses to give students the knowledge and skills needed for immediate employ- ment. Sandhills Community College was actually the first community college in the state, chartered in 1963. Active-duty soldiers, veterans, the reserve, National Guard members, and their families should give UNC- Pembroke a close look when pursuing online college courses in North Carolina. As a designated military- friendly school, it has received numerous accolades from both military and veterans groups for its dedication to helping service members and their families. A special- ized Military Outreach team is ready to help prospective students find a course of study that fits, and UNCP's close proximity to Fort Bragg could be an added bonus for students. Eight undergraduate degree-completion programs are available, including four bachelor's differ- ent degrees in interdisciplinary studies. The BIS gives students the opportunity to take a variety of classes as they select a more specific major. Fayetteville State University (FSU) is a his- torically black, regional university that will proudly celebrate 150 years of excellence in preparing educa- tors, leaders, and engaged citizens during this aca- demic year. The university is part of the prestigious University of North Carolina system with a diverse population of over 6,500 students and over 800 faculty and staff offering over 60 degrees at the baccalaureate and master's levels, and a doctorate in educational leadership. Two Fayetteville State University (FSU) online degree programs have also been recognized by U.S. News and World Report for being among the best in the nation - the Criminal Justice Program and the Master of Business Administration Program. With a lush, 600-acre campus bordered by a mile-long stretch of the scenic Cape Fear River, Methodist Univer- sity has nearly doubled its enrollment since 1990, becom- ing one of the fastest-growing institutions in the southeast. Founded in 1956, Methodist offers a comprehensive liberal arts-based curriculum with distinctive programs such as engineering, PGA golf management, nursing, justice stud- ies, and the renowned Reeves School of Business. Meth- odist also offers doctorate programs in physical therapy and occupational therapy, and a master's degree in physi- cian assistant studies. Methodist has a cohesive student body from over 41 states and more than 53 countries. The University has an international art gallery, state-of-the-art performance hall, and new 300-seat worship center. Perhaps the best-known four-year school in the area is still East Carolina University (ECU), located in Greenville, North Carolina. ECU has led the way in dis- tance education in North Carolina and is now getting well- deserved recognition.
