LAKE NORMAN VOLUME 10—ISSUE 1 65 THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE — CHARLOTTE | VOLUME 2 — ISSUE 2 SURROUNDING COUNTIES Art lovers are in Nirvana with time spent at Bob Doster's Backstreet Studio, Gallery and Garden. Doster is an internationally acclaimed sculptor with art pieces installed throughout his hometown and across the globe. The unique studio is in a former pool hall and cafe space with murals dating to the 1940s. Stop in the USC-Lancaster Native American Studies Center to learn about Native American history. Traditional artist Beckee Garris will appear at the Center as Artist-in-Residence through December, demonstrating pottery, basket making techniques and sharing Catawba traditions. Plans are underway to offer a course in Native American language. Locals like to get outside for recreation, sports and plain ole "R and R." At the Andrew Jackson Park/ Museum outdoor lovers can exercise, relax and learn about a former president. The park created as a memorial to the seventh president of the United States features an Andrew Jackson Museum that details his boyhood in South Carolina. A birthday celebration is held each March in Jackson's honor. Other popular features include living history programs, an 18th- century replica schoolhouse, campground and picnic facilities, a fishing lake and nature trails. The city is planning the Lindsay Pettus Greenway which when finished will connect people to places of interest throughout the city. The greenway will run alongside Gills Creek and accommodate walkers, runners and cyclists. Those with a "need for speed" head to Lancaster Speedway to experience the "Grand Daddy" of local tracks. Built by locals, it is one of the oldest surviving dirt tracks in the South. Agritourism is alive in Lancaster County with brewers, farmers and artisan entrepreneurs working together to bring products to locals using sustainable practices. The Craft Stand, located in a renovated century-old former bank building, offers retail craft beer in bottles and 24 local craft beers on tap including local brew from Benford Brewing Company, South Carolina's first operating agricultural brewery. Located close to the region's best attractions and sites, the Kilburnie inn at Craig Farm feels miles away when guests retreat in the evening. Innkeeper, Johannes Tromp is not only a history buff who has painstakingly restored the inn, but also a former New York City restaurateur and European-trained chef. Wrapped in history, simple elegance, and pampering Kilburnie is not to be missed.
