THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE — FAYETTEVILLE | FORT BRAGG | SANDHILLS REGION VOLUmE 6 — ISSUE 1 18 sandhills Visit the state historic site, Town Creek Indian Mound, for a complete chronicle of the Pee Dee tribal culture. The Indian mound is the state's only historic site dedicated to American Indian culture. The site is also North Carolina's oldest historic site dating back nearly 13,000 years. Candor (also called Peach Town) celebrates the peach industry on the third Saturday in July with the North Carolina Peach Festival. Richmond County is home of "the Rock" also known as Rockingham Speedway. The speedway once brought some of NASCAR's most legendary drivers like Richard Petty to race on the one-mile asphalt race track. Dubbed the "Hardest Working Dragstrip in the Southeast," the two-lane asphalt ribbon called Rockingham Dragway plays host to more than 90 events annually. When NASCAR pulled out, racing fans when to work and brought in lawn mower racing. Now on Saturday nights, the Ellerbe Lions Club is the place to be. Typical riding mowers are in the lower division with modifed mowers (racing tires and other features enabling the machine to hit 70 miles per hour) in the top division. Hundreds come out to watch races on machines meant for cutting grass. For a slower pace, get on the Hitchcock Creek Blue Trail in Rockingham. The trail was recently tapped by the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and made the list for the state's top nine river trips for wildlife and wildlife-associated activities. Richmond County is also home to the Pee Dee Wildlife Refuge where hiking, horseback riding, boating, and hunting are available to the public. Sip some wine at Little River Vineyard and Winery where winemaking techniques hail from Europe, Africa and Napa Valley. At the Hamlet Historic Depot and Museum visitors see the only Victorian Queen Anne Train station in North Carolina. The active passenger depot has exhibits that allow visitors to explore the history behind the Seaboard Railroad. >> Julielynn is your total package real estate advisor.
