THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE — FAYETTEVILLE | FORT BRAGG | SANDHILLS REGION VOLUmE 6 — ISSUE 1 46 mOOre COunty opened the brewery located next to the railroad tracks. These owners/veterans have also partnered with the KA-BAR knife company to co-brand their brown ale and create unique tap handles like no other. Their beers are now distributed in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and South Korea. Just 6 miles north of Aberdeen, it should be no surprise that Golf Digest has ranked Pinehurst, North Carolina in its Top 10 "Best Buddies Trip Destination" List. As course host for both the 2014 Men's and Women's U.S. Open Championships, Pinehurst has been one of the highest ranked golf destinations on the East Coast. This region was the long-time home to the father of golf course architecture, Donald Ross, and now is home to many of his masterpieces. Around 40 world-class courses are now nestled within a 15-mile radius. History being made in Pinehurst is far from over with the announcement that Pinehurst Resort & Country Club's famed Course No. 2 has been selected by the United States Golf Association (USGA) as the site of the 2024 U.S. Open Championship. The dates of the championship are June 13-16. This will be the fourth time the USGA has chosen to bring the national championship to Pinehurst in just 25 years. Pinehurst will also host the 2017 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship and the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship. The club annually conducts the North & South Amateur Championship, a prestigious national competition that began in 1901, as well as the Women's North & South Amateur, which began just two years later. Another 6 miles east of Pinehurst completes the golf- resort-retirement "trinity" of Aberdeen, Pinehurst, and Southern Pines. The heart of downtown Southern Pines is its unique array of shops scattered throughout a streetscape of historic buildings. Downtown's current commercial energy is directly linked to its historic boom in the 1920's, when it frst grew rapidly as a center of commerce and resort living. Part of that vivacity comes from fairly new ventures such as Southern Pines Brewing Company. Located on the northern end of Southern Pines and started as an idea by three former Green Berets - Micah Niebauer, John Brumer and Jason Ginos; Southern Pines Brewing Company opened to the public in 2014. Southern Pines Brewing ofers a weekly tour on Saturdays at 2 p.m. There's lots of variety in Southern Pines. The Southern Pines Historic District is home to the Shaw House (c. 1820) the town's oldest home illustrating the daily life of early Scottish settlers. The depot, built in 1898, is still serving passengers today via Amtrak. There's the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities and the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. The Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve is a NC State Park with nearly 900 acres of fora and fauna, more than four miles of hiking trails and an interactive museum.
