Auto races thrill spectators at the Cherokee Speedway. Each spring, a series of high speed bicycle races are run through the streets of the historic downtown. Sports fever in the community is matched by patriotic fervor. In Gafney, the Cherokee County Veterans Park, the Cherokee County Veterans Museum and the annual Veterans' Day Parade honor those who served the nation. Three national parks - Cowpens National Battlefeld, Kings Mountain National Military Park and the fnal portion of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail - are located in Cherokee County. Each of these parks commemorates the valor of Patriot forces who won critical victories during the Revolutionary War. Other historic sites within the city memorialize Revolutionary War activity. Revolutionary War Weekend is a series of community activities held annually in early October. "Local history here is America's history," stated LeighAnn Snuggs, Director of Marketing and Tourism for the City of Gafney. "It happened here in 1780 and 1781. It happens here today with year-round celebrations of our cultural heritage as well as many modern day festivals and events." Gafney has a proud past, and a promising future. The Gafney Visitors Center and Art Gallery is housed within a distinguished, century-old structure that originally was the city's frst federal Post Ofce building. The gallery now exhibits works of local artists, shows by visiting artists, and special exhibitions on topics of relevance to the community. Partnerships among the city and county administrations, various civic organizations, the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce, and the Gafney Downtown Business Association contribute to the quality of life enjoyed by residents.
