Another good reason to move is for the availability of excellent healthcare. The Coastal area of North Carolina has a few of the state's fnest healthcare institutions within easy access. The following is a closer look at some of the major healthcare providers in the Coastal NC region. Home to one of the state's frst medical and nursing schools, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) in Wilmington is the largest health system in the region. For almost 50 years, New Hanover Regional Medical Center has served the residents of southeastern North Carolina and beyond. The fve-star rated health system includes the main campus in Wilmington, Cape Fear Hospital in Wilmington, and Pender Memorial Hospital in Burgaw. NHRMC provides emergency medical services, critical care ground and air transport through VitaLink and AirLink, health and diagnostic centers, outpatient rehabilitation, and through the NHRMC Physician Group, urgent care centers and affliated physician practices throughout the region. NHRMC is a teaching hospital and regional referral center. Also, as the tertiary care center for a seven-county area, the system offers many services not available in smaller community hospitals: a comprehensive cardiac program and open heart surgery, vascular operating room employing stent technology, trauma care, neurosurgery, orthopedics, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, cancer care and other specialties. Other facilities include one of 10 Obesity Surgery Centers of Excellence in North Carolina, a Behavioral Health Hospital for adults with mental health and substance abuse disorders, and the Rehabilitation Hospital for injury or disease recovery. In addition to advanced medicine and exceptional staff, NHRMC offers a soothing environment for patients to receive care and heal. The addition of a Surgical Pavilion and the 150-bed, all-private-room Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital, the only one of its kind in the region, provides privacy and excellent care. NHRMC is home to the state's only all- private-room Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that cares for babies born premature or critically ill. The Surgical Pavilion boasts 26 operating rooms with each room designed to accommodate the entire surgical staff along with some of medicine's most advanced surgical equipment, including the daVinci robotic surgical system, which allows surgeons greater visibility and precision when performing complex minimally invasive procedures. NHRMC was the frst to use the robotic surgical system and has the largest team of experienced robotic surgeons in the region. Surgeons use the technology to perform robotic GYN, urology, prostate and GYN oncology procedures. Cape Fear Hospital is the only dedicated orthopedic hospital in the state with a team of board-certifed or board eligible orthopedic surgeons and more than 75 clinicians with advanced orthopedic training. The orthopedic specialty hospital is ranked in the top 10 percent of all orthopedic facilities nationally. NHRMC's Heart Center is the area's only open-heart surgery program. The Heart Center also includes the Cardiac Rehabilitation program, which offers classes on diet and stress management, as well as exercise classes monitored by registered nurses and exercise physiologists. The Zimmer Cancer Center is a nationally designated teaching hospital that houses the hospital's cancer clinical trials program and gives local residents a chance to participate in national treatment studies. The health system is the region's only Level II Trauma Center with emergency departments at NHRMC, Cape Fear Hospital and Pender Memorial Hospital. Critical care transport systems include mobile and air ambulance service in a seven-county area. The medical center has consistently expanded services into the surrounding region, to include construction of NHRMC ED-North, a standalone emergency department that opened in May 2015 New Hanover Regional Medical Center was recently named a recipient of the Women's Choice Award >> accommodating, award-winning, availability
