Art is alive in the community of Star, the town located in the geographic center of North Carolina. Businesses programs, education and ventures are centered on promoting art such as STARworks Glass, a public access glass art studio, STARworks clay studio, STARworks ceramics and others. In Mt. Gilead, history lovers can take a self- guided tour of the Town Creek Indian Mound. The state's oldest historic site (dating back to 1,000 A.D.) tells the story of the Pee Dee culture. The Indian mound is set on 51 acres with a river and nature trail, visitor center and museum. Candor is the peach capital of North Carolina. The town celebrates the peach industry each year on the third Saturday in July at the North Carolina Peach Festival. Peaches are enjoyed in their natural state, with ice cream and other delicacies. Horses mixed with history define Hoke County. Major industries are poultry and pine straw production (one of the state's leading producers) but the county's biggest asset is the internationally known Carolina Horse Park. The annual Steeplechase is held each spring in Raeford and draws thousands of visitors, both locally and from abroad. Horse trials, jumping and dressage are some of the equestrian events held at the park. Raeford is also the home of the annual Poultry Festival, now renamed the Fall Festival, that celebrates its 32th year in September of 2016. Also, worth a visit is one of the earliest Scottish homesteads in the region, the Mill Prong house. After extensive renovation, the more than 200-year old Federal period style house is open for visitors to tour. Most people don't know that Harnett County is home to Coble Ski and Wakeboard Camp, the world's largest water skiing school with 10 private lakes spread out over hundreds of acres.
