VOLUME 10—ISSUE 1 51 THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE — FAYETTEVILLE | FORT BRAGG | SANDHILLS REGION VOLUME 6 — ISSUE 2 Serving Those Who Serve and Their Best Friends Dogs on Deployment was founded by husband and wife, Shawn and Alisa Johnson, who serve in the US Navy and US Marine Corps respectively. They started Dogs on Deployment in June 2011. As a dual-military family, the founders have been in situations where they needed a pro- gram like Dogs on Deployment. Alisa had orders to move to Quantico, Virginia where she was to attend six months of mil- itary training. At the same time, Shawn, was to be deployed. Neither could care for their beloved dog, JD. They were lucky enough to have family to rely on, but recognized the need for a program which would help others who found themselves in a similar situation. Thus, Dogs on Deployment was born. Dogs on Deployment is a national network of volunteers willing to board military pets during their owner's service. Service members face many challenges during their military careers including rigorous training schedules and deploy- ments. To ease the stress of serving our country, and to make sure service members' beloved pets are there to greet their owners after their return, Dogs on Deployment works hard to find foster homes each and every day. To date, Dogs on Deployment has successfully deployed over 730 pets and have given over $90,000 in grants to military pets in need of vaccines, check-ups, micro-chipping, emergency medical procedures, etc. The success of Dogs on Deployment falls on the shoul- ders of the all-volunteer team scattered across the United States. Volunteer boarders open their homes to military pets while our service members fight for our freedoms across the globe. Regional and local volunteers work tirelessly to make sure every service member, their family, and their local communities know about this wonderful program. Dogs on Deployment looks forward to the day when no military pet is left behind, re-homed, or surrendered due to a military obli- gation. Additionally, Dogs on Deployment promotes respon- sible, life-long pet ownership in the military community by: • Advocating for military pet owner rights on military installations • Providing educational resources for military members about responsible pet ownership • Granting financial assistance to military members for help with their pet's care during emergencies • Promoting healthy pet lifestyles, including spay and neuter, insurance options and vaccinations • Connecting with community organizations to ensure Dogs on Deployment resources are available to military families If you, or someone you know, would like to sup- port the Dogs on Deployment cause, please visit our website at www.dogsondeployment.org or on our various social media pages including Facebook/ dogsondeployment and Twitter @dogsondeploymnt.
