THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE — UPSTATE SC | VOLUME 12 — ISSUE 2 70 EDUCATION The public school districts that serve the Upstate include the Anderson County School District, Greenville County, Laurens County, Oconee County, Pickens County, and Spartanburg County districts. Anderson, Greenville, and Spartanburg are the top three in size. In fact, the Greenville County School (GCS) district is the largest school district in South Carolina with over 72,000 students. GCS is rated a school system of excellence with the awarding of a district- wide national accreditation from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission. AdvancED is the largest community of education professionals in the world. It is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of PreK- 12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential. GCS also leads the state in school choice with schools of various sizes in urban, suburban and rural settings, and magnet academies offering specialized studies in areas such as communications arts, languages, the arts, and science and mathematics. Greenville County Schools feature several gifted and talented programs, International Baccalaureate studies at all grade levels, a Fine Arts Center, Roper Mountain Science Center, career technology choices, virtual school, Baldrige quality schools, and many other specialized programs. PTAs and local businesses are both extremely active, providing hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours each year, as well as millions of dollars in financial support. Within the district there are 51 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, and 14 high schools. Independent/private schools have a rich heritage in the upstate. Since opening its doors a the first independent school in the Upstate of South Carolina (in 1957), Spartanburg Day School (SDS) has been on a mission to shape the intellectual, physical and moral development of students in an environment that challenges, yet supports and nurtures young people. At SDS, especially in this day and age, they realize students are already members of a growing global community and teach them as such. SDS is a college-preparatory, co-educational day school for students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve and the first in Spartanburg County to implement the International Baccalaureate Program, to introduce Chinese language, and Singapore Math, and to establish College Partnerships with seven local colleges and universities. Truth is, the school has many educational "firsts' to its credit including being the first independent school in the state to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the first school in South Carolina to establish a chapter of the Cum Laude Society, the highest national honor society for academics in independent schools in the country. But perhaps what makes SDS so unique is the emphasis the school puts on its robust mentorship program for Middle and Upper School students made possible by a collaboration with over 20 businesses, professionals, and community leaders. An extensive scholarships and tuition assistance program attracts and supports motivated, capable students through endowment earnings and the generosity of donors. Since 2006, SDS has also benefited from an investment in excess of $20 million in capital improvements. Shannon Forest Christian School is a pre-school through 12th Grade community of caring teachers, committed staff and high-achieving students who enjoy a comprehensive, college preparatory education in a caring Christian environment. Small class sizes provide a supportive culture and Biblical principles are integrated into all aspects of a Shannon education.
