83 THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE — TRIANGLE NC | VOLUME 17 — ISSUE 1 Acton Academy Acton Academy Durham is a k-8 Independent school that uses an innovative project-based approach to prepare students for the 21st century. We equip students with the skills, experiences, and tools to passionately pursue academic excellence. Acton is fundamentally different from traditional schools. Our approach is based on guiding students through a comprehensive Knowledge Map. This approach directs children on a path to mastery learning of their core skills (reading, writing, math) and through projects carefully designed and cultivated to meet their basic learning objectives and provide them with depth and breadth in a wide variety of subjects, supported by the latest in technology and cognitive science. Students learn in collaborative classrooms of multi-age learners, and our flexible approach challenges each student. For more information, please visit and see our ad on the adjacent page. Our Playouse Preschool With two locations – one in the historic White Cross School just outside of Carrboro/Chapel Hill, the other in a beautiful wooded setting in Durham – the environments of Our PlayHouse are designed to promote exploration, adventure and productive play. Our PlayHouse serves children ages 1-6 years in our preschool and kindergarten classrooms. We support families and the development of the whole child through a grounded curriculum emphasizing community relationships and guided learning. We work to help children gain social, emotional, and educational skills during their time at Our PlayHouse. Open-ended play and exploration naturally encourage children's sense of curiosity and desire to learn. Literacy, mathematics, and science are naturally interwoven with play, art, and creative endeavors. For more information, please visit and see our ad on the adjacent page.
