13 THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE — CAPE FEAR NC | VOLUME 13—ISSUE 1 CAPE FEAR LIVING Farmer's markets, corn mazes, a small vineyard and a plantation are all found in Pender County. America's oldest peanut plantation, Poplar Grove, is a museum complex with 1850 manor house, live craft demonstrations, outbuildings, exhibits, farm animals, and picnic and playground area. Adjacent to the plantation is the beautiful, 63-acre, Abbey Nature Preserve with more than two miles of trails and pond with footbridge. Agri-tourism is important in the blueberry sanctuary, particularly in July when the North Carolina Blueberry festival comes to town. The berry is served up in ice cream and a multitude of ways. At Bannerman Vineyard you can celebrate the state's grape at one of North Carolina's oldest muscadine grape vineyards. Eating at local seafood restaurants with a view is a favorite pastime. Buddy's Crab House & Oyster Bar is the place to go for oysters and a cold beer on a hot summer day. Or, try a doughnut to start off the morning from the Fractured Prune where the sweet confections are creative and delicious. The year-old shop was featured on HGTV, Island Life, in April. Pender County is committed to the ecosystem and natural habitat of the region. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City, one of the largest Sea Turtle Hospitals on the East Coast, has rescued hundreds of turtles since its inception in 1997. Founder Karen Beasley was honored in 2017 with a lifetime achievement award for her dedication to marine life. History is found in Burgaw at the Burgaw Train Depot. The depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the North Carolina Civil War Trail. It houses the Burgaw Incubator Kitchen, the Burgaw Chamber, train artifacts, the Arts Council, and "Feast on the Southeast," a local farmers' initiative. While visiting in Burgaw, take time to go shopping at a local institution that is more than a century old. Since 1903, Harrell's Department Store in Burgaw has been a location for both locals and visitors to shop for anything from clothes to appliances. The store was started by Vernon Harrell's great-grandfather, grandfather and great-uncle. The town has been the scene of movies over the years and a scene from "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was filmed inside Harrell's. More than 30 movies, TV shows and series have been filmed in the past several decades in Burgaw – a town that Hollywood loves. >> to w e l c o m e h o m e north carolina north carolina Cornerstone Home Lending loves Relocation Buyers!
