THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE—JOHNSTON/SOUTHERN WAKE COUNTIES NC | VOLUME 16—ISSUE 1 38 RELOCATING SENIORS Their mission is to provide housing and transportation for the benefit of the community, services and opportunities that empower older adults to remain active and connected, and enable them to lead quality lives of independence. They provide senior services including caregiver support, senior centers, health and wellness programs, educational classes and programs, recreational and social activities and even a senior lunch program. For the active senior, Wake County is just as excited about the "great outdoors" as Johnston County. Wake County's parks and open spaces provide recreational opportunities for residents as well as a cultural identity and a natural legacy. Eight park and trail facilities operate within the county offering many opportunities for recreation and exploration. You can sail across Lake Crabtree, picnic or horseback ride along the American Tobacco Trail, and watch the waterwheel turn on the last remaining gristmill in Wake County, all the while learning about the piedmont's flora and fauna. Wake's Open Space program, which strives to protect water quality through targeted land acquisition, has protected over 4,700 acres of land across Wake County so far. Often dubbed the "Smithsonian of the South," Raleigh boasts an abundance of high-quality, free museums, historic attractions and educational institutions. For instance, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the North Carolina Museum of History, the beautiful North Carolina Museum of Art and the Contemporary Art Museum are equally impressive. Music and entertainment takes a backseat to no one with over 80 venues to choose from – no matter what your taste in music. Wake County can also make all your golfing dreams come true with many regulation courses open to the public and numerous driving ranges and practice areas, long courses and short, modest and hazard-lined fairways, and even a spot open 'til midnight year-round. On top of everything else the region offers "edge-of- your-seat" North Carolina State University sporting events, Carolina Hurricanes NHL hockey, minor-league baseball with the Carolina Mudcats, and the North Carolina FC pro soccer team so you're sure to find the area a big-time spectator sports-lover destination. As in neighboring Johnston County, the Wake County Human Services' Senior and Adult Services also offer a variety of home-based and community-based programs and services to seniors, adults with disabilities and their families. Maximizing self-sufficiency, safety, health and independence so that seniors and adults can remain safely in the community for as long as possible is their aim. They also look to maintain the highest quality of life for those who reside in adult and family care homes in Wake County. []
