THE ORIGINAL RELOCATION GUIDE — TRIANGLE NC | VOLUME 17 — ISSUE 2 30 RALEIGH Local colleges also fuel Raleigh's growth. At the heart of the city sits North Carolina State University, a research institution with an enrollment of 34,000 students focused on science, technology, engineering, math, design, the humanities, social science, textiles and veterinary medicine. The fifth- largest employer in Wake County, the university ranks as one of the top-five best value public universities in the state and also takes first place for return on investment. Ten additional colleges draw some of the world's best minds to Raleigh including Meredith College, Campbell Law School, Strayer University, Shaw Univeristy and Wake Technical Community College. In fact, nearly 50 percent of residents hold a bachelor's degree or higher and approximately one in six people have a graduate or professional degree — that's 70 percent higher than the statewide average. Many students go on to pursue careers at the Research Triangle Park (RTP), one of the largest research parks in the nation, employing more than 2,000 people at big-name companies like IBM, Cisco Systems, SAS Institute, and GlaxoSmithKline. Others will work for one of the three major employers in Wake County — Duke University and Health System, the State of North Carolina, and the Wake County Public School System. When not busy working, locals have plenty of options for rest and respite. The city boasts more than 9,000 acres of parkland, 1,300 acres of lakes and rivers, and a 152- mile, nationally-acclaimed greenway interspersed with recreational trails for walking, jogging, hiking, birding and more. A long list of athletic facilities should entertain nearly any sports fanatic. The Buffaloe Road Athletic Park comprises six fields, an outdoor track and an aquatic center, while the Walnut Creek Softball Complex hosts nine, halogen-lit diamonds with enclosed dugouts and plenty of bleachers for onlookers.>> Downtown City of Raleigh Transit Catch a ride to area malls, restaurants, museums, parks, movie theaters & more! @GoRaleighNC Plan your trip: GoRaleigh.org 919-485-RIDE
