That is still true at the premiere soft ware development company where the perks make everyday seem like a day at Disney World. At SAS, employees can go the company doctor, the company school, and the company daycare. On Wednesdays, M&M's are free. To counteract the calories the company provides 50,000 square foot state-of-the art fitness center that employees use during working hours. Laid back and convenience are the company's mantra which is why it is usually on the "Best Place to Work in North Carolina" list. SAS has more than 5,572 employees in region. SAS is but one reason that Money magazine frequently ranks Cary one of the "Best Places to Live" in the country. In fact, Cary consistently makes the honor roll among the nation's top cities/towns, being recognized as one of the "Safest Places to Live in America," "Best Places to Retire" and "Best Places to Raise a Family in the U.S." A WalletHub survey of best cities for first-time home owners ranked Cary with a strong real estate market, determined using its rent-to-price ratio, median home price appreciation and other metrics. A SmartAsset study found that more than 40 percent of millennials in Cary owned their home. Cary also had the fifth lowest property crime rate, one of the metrics used to determine quality of life. Residents also pay the lowest property tax in Wake County. The town's growth is most evident in the revitalized and expanding downtown. New restaurants, a hotel, retail and mixed-used development are bringing people to downtown. Mid-Town Square, a development that mixes the old with the new sits next door to the nearly century old Mid-Town Shopping Center. The Cary Theater, built in 1946, was once home to the town's first indoor movie theater where audiences saw live performances as well as films. Renovated to its former glory, The Cary Theater marquee lights are a reminder the town's cultural arts experience is alive and well. The town's 25-year master plan is already in full swing. The plan will add more walkable, mixed-use development with living space, retail, restaurants and entertainment. Future housing options will include condominiums, apartments and townhomes for millennials, retirees and single-person households. In a few years locals who love IKEA can shop locally instead of driving to Charlotte. In May, the Swedish Cary company announced its second North Carolina store will open in the Cary Towne Center in 2020. Restaurant entrepreneurs like Richard Procida and Lionel Vatinet are happy to be a part of Cary's downtown renaissance. Procida, or "Pro" as he is called, realized a lifelong dream in June when he opened Pro's Epicurean Market & Café located in the renovated Mid-Town Shopping Center. The menu features menu items made from family recipes. Francesca's sausage pie is from Pro's mother and the manicotti is his grandmother's recipe. The restaurant is named for Richard's father, who also had the nickname "Pro." To experience decadent luxury on a plate the choice is Herons. One of only 62 Forbes five star restaurants in the world, Herons is the signature restaurant of The Umstead Hotel and Spa. Vegetables and herbs on the menu are grown from the nearby dedicated farm. Herons has been recognized by Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveler, and Southern Living, in addition to receiving numerous accolades and awards including Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide and Five Diamonds from AAA. Try squid ink pasta or shrimp and grits for brunch. La Farm Bakery has opened the first phase of its new production facility. The new Chatham Street location, designed to give a full view of the bakers in action – mixing, shaping and baking breads by hand – will be open Monday through Saturday and will offer the "grab- and-go" counter service of freshly baked breads and pastries. The bakery produces more than 35 different styles of artisan bread throughout the year for their bakery, area Whole Foods Markets, farmers markets, and for their bread truck. >> trendy, traditional, high tech
